There are many wonderful public and semi private golf courses within a 30 minute radius of Saluda; however, we have established a corporate membership at one of the best private clubs in the area for the pleasure of our guests. When you stay at the Orchard Inn you can play a course which is not otherwise open to the public – Kenmure Country Club.

Located six miles from Saluda in the quaint mountain village of Flat Rock, NC and designed by Joe Lee, Kenmure has been voted by “Golfweek” as one of the “Top 50” developed courses in the southeast. This bent grass course is one of the premier private courses in western North Carolina. From the longest tees, it features 6,509 yards of golf for a par of 72. With a PGA course rating of 71.2 and a slope rating of 130, Kenmure’s course layout is as stern a test as can be found, while maintaining a golfer-friendly course.

From breathtaking course views to the stunning beauty of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains, it’s no wonder that this private golf course is top rated.

As a guest of the Orchard Inn you will be able to play 18 holes for only $75 per round, including cart fee. $50 for 9 holes.

What has become a much anticipated annual tradition at the Orchard Inn are our five Dickens Dinners. Nothing gets you into the spirit of the season better than entering our spectacular living room with a roaring fire in the fireplace, our beautifully decorated 10′ tree, candles burning all around, the smell of evergreen, the taste of spiced wine, and the soft joyous sound of holiday music. Combine that with a sumptuous 5-course meal, and a very special reading from Charles Dickens “A Christmas Carole” between each course by our own Mr. Pickwick, David Riddle. The evening ends by the fire with a complimentary glass of Smoking Bishop. After dinner, treat yourself to an overnight in one of the eight upstairs rooms of the Inn for only $110.

Dates this year are: December 10, 16, 17, 20 and 22, 2011.

Apfelstrudel Recipe

1 package Filo dough

Or: if you are an experienced baker, make your own Strudel Dough from:

200 grams flour, 1/8 liter water, and one table spoon oil. Mix all ingredients on clean surface, knead until smooth and does not stick to hands and surface anymore. On a damp clean cloth, pull dough in all directions until really thin. My grandmother in Vienna always said: the most important ingredient to a good Strudel is a love letter: the dough has to be so thin that you can read a love letter through it…..

If the dough is tough to pull without tearing, brush liquid butter on it and it will be easier to pull.

If you are using Filo Dough sheets – nowadays really the preferred way of making nice light, flaky Strudel, brush liquid butter in between 3 layers of sheets. Keep rest of the sheets covered with damp clean cloth, as they would otherwise get too dry and break.

Filling:

Peel and core 4 large apples (Granny Smith or any tart apple), cut in small pieces

Add: 1 tbl spoon Cinnamon

Juice of ½ lemon

Raisins, walnuts, almonds

Mix well in bowl.

Brush Strudel Dough with liquid butter, spread apple mixture on it, with the help of the damp cloth roll into a fairly tight Strudel. Place on greased or lined baking sheet, brush Strudel again with butter.

Bake for about 25 minutes at 440 degrees.

Dust with powder sugar, serve warm or cold. In Vienna we would never, ever think about serving Apfelstrudel without whipped cream…….
